Are you a CAD Manager? Watch this CAD Setup Utility Tutorial Video

Are you a CAD Manager? Do you manage AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D resources, settings, and file paths? If so, read on.

A common method to automate the custom configuration of Autodesk specific applications such as AutoCAD, Mapo 3D, and Civil 3D is to configure a single computer in the desired manner and export an AutoCAD profile (ARG) file then import that profile to each user’s computer. This works well, but it has some limitations.

  • It cannot distribute custom CUIX files.
  • It is version and application specific Meaning a Civil 3D ARG file cannot be used for Map 3D. And an ARG file created for Civil 3D 2024 cannot be used for Civil 3D 2026. It takes time to configure all these AutoCAD products.
  • The CAD Manager must configure the settings manually on a test machine when a new version is installed before the ARG file can be created. This takes time.
  • An imported ARG will overwrite any user customizations. This causes frustration.
  • What gets distributed?
    • AutoCAD
      • Custom CUIX files
      • System variables
      • Status bar button visibility
      • Many settings and file paths in AutoCAD Options
    • Civil 3D
      • Pipe network catalog path
      • Pressure network catalog path
      • Survey figure path
  • It is not application specific. I can be run on any AutoCAD product.
  • When a new version of AutoCAD is installed, it can be run on that new version without configuration. This saves time.
  • The users’ custom settings are safe except for the ones that will be mandated by the company.

SolidCAD has developed an application which is intended to circumvent these limitations. The desired settings are entered into a Microsoft Excel file, and the application uses that file to configure ANY AutoCAD application.

For CAD Managers responsible for managing AutoCAD®, Civil 3D®, and Map 3D environments, maintaining standardized settings, file paths, and custom configurations across multiple users and Autodesk versions can become a major operational challenge.

Traditional AutoCAD profile (ARG) deployment methods are commonly used to distribute configurations, but they often create compatibility limitations, require time-consuming manual setup, and overwrite valuable user customizations. As organizations adopt newer Autodesk releases and manage increasingly complex CAD standards, the need for a more scalable and flexible configuration management solution becomes critical.

SolidCAD has developed an AutoCAD Configuration Management solution designed to simplify the deployment of AutoCAD and Civil 3D settings across any Autodesk AutoCAD-based application. By using a centralized Microsoft Excel configuration file, CAD Managers can automate environment setup, standardize company settings, distribute custom CUIX files, and reduce deployment time across multiple Autodesk platforms and versions.

SolidCAD’s AutoCAD Configuration Management tool provides CAD Managers with a faster, more scalable way to deploy and manage AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Map 3D configurations across an organization.

Unlike traditional ARG file workflows, this solution supports multiple Autodesk applications and versions without requiring separate profile files or extensive manual setup. The application allows organizations to centrally manage AutoCAD settings, Civil 3D file paths, custom CUIX files, system variables, and user environments using a simple Microsoft Excel-based configuration system.

Key benefits include:

  • Automated AutoCAD and Civil 3D configuration deployment
  • Support for multiple Autodesk applications and versions
  • Centralized CAD standards management
  • Distribution of custom CUIX files and system settings
  • Reduced CAD administration and deployment time
  • Protection of user-specific customizations
  • Simplified onboarding for new Autodesk releases

For organizations seeking to improve CAD standardization, reduce IT overhead, and streamline Autodesk environment management, SolidCAD’s solution offers a modern alternative to traditional AutoCAD ARG deployment methods.
